Liverpool eye Villarreal ace Samuel Chukwueze signature at the expense of Xherdan Shaqiri

Villarreal’s 20-year-old winger Samuel Chukwueze raised eyebrows around European football during the La Liga season. The Nigerian scored five goals and tallied two assists in 26 games for Villarreal in La Liga. He is now courting interest from clubs interested in his signature.

Chukwueze’s play has piqued the interest of Liverpool. According to the Metro, the Reds are ready to fund a transfer for the winger. Chukwueze came through Villarreal’s youth team and is currently valued at just £9 million, according to Tranfermarkt.

That price will most likely be inflated and the Mirror claims Xherdan Shaqiri could be sold to fund a transfer for Chukwueze.

Who is Samuel Chukwueze?

Chukwueze made his Villarreal first team debut in September 2018 and was a regular in Javier Calleja’s side. The Nigerian’s first season as a Yellow Submarine regular didn’t go as planned, however, as they fought relegation up until the final weeks of the La Liga season.

The winger gained experience playing in the Europa League where he featured nine times. Chukwueze scored one goal and contributed an assist to Villarreal’s Europa League run to the quarterfinals.

According to the Mail, Liverpool are not expecting a big summer in the transfer market. With players such as Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno leaving on free transfers, it doesn’t seem likely the offseason will be quiet, however.

Liverpool are in need of a striker and have been linked to RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner. Chukwueze may be just the tip of the iceberg if reports of Liverpool’s interest are true.

Why sell Xherdan Shaqiri for Samuel Chukwueze?

It seems a bit surprising that manager Jurgen Klopp would sell Shaqiri, a proven quantity, for Chukwueze. But Shaqiri greatly fell out of favour following Liverpool’s FA Cup third round loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers in January.

The Swiss international looked lackadaisical and disinterested during the game, and he spent much of the remainder of the season on the bench.

Chukwueze is younger and would give Liverpool some youth in reserve.

But Klopp does have a ready-made winger he could bring into the Liverpool first-team fold without buying Chukwueze.

Harry Wilson has excelled at Derby County and deserves a chance to shine with the Reds. The on-loan Liverpool man has scored 17 goals while adding five assists for Derby County. Wilson will appear in Derby County’s Championship Playoff Final on Monday.

Liverpool and Klopp seem to have options in attack and move for Chukwueze’s signature feels strange going into what could be a major offseason.
