Will the New York Knicks select RJ Barrett in the NBA Draft?

The New York Knicks finished the NBA regular season with the Association’s worst record. New York ended with just 17 wins and pinned many of their hopes for the future on the possible free agent signing of Kevin Durant.

The current Golden State Warriors star is rumoured to be on his way to the Big Apple once the NBA Playoffs end. Durant could change the future of the New York Knicks franchise, but he will need help.

The New York Knicks future is pinned on this summer

The Knicks had hoped to land the NBA Draft’s No. 1 selection. That selection went to the New Orleans Pelicans, however. New York will get the third overall pick unless they move up two places via a trade.

That is highly unlikely to happen as the Knicks are already well positioned. The Knicks have options in the NBA Draft but making the right pick is not black and white.

Duke University’s Zion Williamson is projected to be the first player drafted. If Williamson is off the board, it will leave New York with several options but according to many NBA insiders, RJ Barrett is the player they should not hesitate to take No. 3.

Barrett has been called “arguably” the best player in the NBA Draft. The 18-year-old was an All-American in his first season at Duke alongside Williamson.

He averaged just under 23 points per game in his freshman year turning heads with his tremendous play.

Could the New York Knicks select another player instead of Barrett?

The Knicks could go in another direction if they land Durant as a free agent. New York has been linked with Boston Celtics guard Kyrie Irving as well. A move could dictate the player New York takes in the NBA Draft.

University of Central Florida centre Tacko Fall has turned heads at the NBA Draft combine. The 7-foot-7 centre’s athleticism shined as his height and wingspan made NBA teams sit up and take notice.

If the Knicks are swayed to take the Senegalese player, it could change their prospects drastically. Barrett, who is just 18, has a bright future ahead of him. Fall is already 23 and may not be as NBA ready as his combine performances have made out.

Williamson, Barrett, and Ja Morant are locks to be top 3 NBA Draft picks. However, if the Knicks cannot get Barrett, Fall could be selected over Morant. The Knicks need for a point guard isn’t as great as a big man like Fall.

The NBA Draft will take place on June 20th and the Knicks are on the clock now to make a selection to change their future.
