Manchester City have signed an all-new kit deal with Puma worth £50 million. The club will end their current kit contract with Nike at the end of the coming Premier League season. From 2019, Man City will don Puma created gear. It is another coup for Puma who in recent seasons have signed deals with AC Milan and Arsenal.
Man City sign new kit deal with Puma worth £50 million
Manchester City’s deal is the largest commercial contract in the club’s history. The £50m deal is only behind Manchester United’s current Adidas and Chelsea’s Nike kit contracts.
The Puma deal will also cover Manchester City’s other clubs under the City Football Group umbrella. The only team that will not wear Puma supplied kits is New York City FC. The American club is contracted to wear Adidas supplied material due to Major League Soccer’s deal with the German sports clothing supplier.
It is believed that Manchester City’s Nike contract is worth £20m.
Kit suppliers are currently battling for the right to supply the biggest clubs in the world. The amount of money being used to lure top teams is staggering. With news that Puma will play Manchester City £50m to wear its designs, Arsenal could be lured away from the company or renegotiate their deal. The Gunners receive £30m from Puma.
Manchester City’s recent home kits have been criticised by supporters. The kits, especially this season’s home shirt, looks basic and much like other clubs’ Nike jerseys. Puma has been praised for offering something different in recent years.
Puma currently provides kits for Premier League teams Arsenal, Burnley, Crystal Palace, and Newcastle United. The company’s deal with Manchester City could be its biggest coup, however. The Blues could be set for their most successful spell at the top of English football and Puma can reap the benefits.
Currently, Barcelona’s Nike kit contract is the wealthiest in football. The deal is worth £140m. Man City’s new deal will put them in the top five of football kit deals in the world.
